MILLER, Louis Currie -  Age 85 years, passed away peacefully in Col-chester East Hants Health Centre on Thursday, December 27, 2012. Louis was born in Noel Shore on March 7, 1927, a son of the late Ernest and Ellen (Hines) Miller. At age 14, Lou quit school to work on the family farm. He later worked in the woods in the local area and spent a few years in Halifax employed by Hoyt's Moving and Storage. Following that he moved back to the Shore and his original home and was self-employed in the trucking industry. At the age of 42 he went back to Upgrading School, wrote his GED and took a course in Small Engines at Adult Vocational School. After graduating with a Diploma as a Small Engines Mechanic he opened and operated his own 'Small Engine Shop' for many years before retiring in 1998. A real country guy, Lou loved to hunt and fish and spent many hours back at the camp in the woods. He enjoyed a moose hunting trip to Newfoundland before he retired. He was a founding member of the Noel Shore Game Protection Association and a supporter of the Nova Scotia Wildlife Association. He travelled extensively enjoying a special trip to Europe where he visited the grave of his late brother Jack in Belgium. One must not forget the fun he had playing all kinds of cards. He loved card parties and also playing cards with family and friends. Lou is survived by his wife of 58 years, Elizabeth (Betty Greene); daughter, Judith (Bernard) White; sons, Earle (Anna) and Jeffrey; grandchildren, Jacqueline (Norman) Fahey and Ronald Crowe. He was very proud of his great-grandchildren, Ryan and Grace Fahey, who often came to help with the wood and other outside chores. Surviving also is brother, Frank (Robena); sisters, Ora (Fred) Nolan, Erma (Ronald) Lamond, Opal (Joe) Luitkus, Kaye Borden, Ruby (Ray) Dimock, Bertha (Ronald) Hollingsworth, and Pauline Keating. Lou was predeceased by brothers, Harry and John 'Jack' and his sisters, Myrtis (Henry) Hennigar and Aileen (Lester) Fahey. Lou was extremely happy in October when his new found niece, Veronica Payne, daughter of Jack Miller arrived from England to visit with her father's family. A celebration of Lou's life will be held in Noel United Church on Tuesday, January 1, 2013 at 3 p.m. with Rev. Natalie Buchanan-Rutherford officiating. A reception will follow in the church basement until 5 p.m. Visitation will continue in the Miller home in Noel Shore, 5784 Highway 215 from 6-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Noel United Church.

MILLER, Frank Bennett
Age 81, of South Maitland, passed away peacefully on October 8, 2013. Born on January 23, 1932, in Noel Shore, Frank was a son of the late Ernest and Ellen (Hines) Miller. Frank is survived by his wife of 57 years, the former Robena 'Babe' Withrow, South Maitland; sons, Tim (Linda), Hammonds Plains, Wayne (Denise), South Maitland; grandsons, Jay, Troy, both of Hammonds Plains; granddaughters, Holly, Brynn, both of South Maitland. Coming from a large family, Frank is also survived by sisters, Ora (Fred) Nolan, Ruby (Ray) Dimock, Bertha (Ronald) Hollingsworth, Opal (Joe) Liutkus, Erma (Ron) Lamond, Pauline Keating, Kaye Borden; sister-in-law, Betty Miller; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Harry (Bernice), Lou, Jack (lost overseas in the Second World War); sisters, Myrtis (Henry) Hennigar, Aileen (Lester) Fahey. Frank worked all his life for McCulloch's Lumber and stayed with the company as it passed through various owners. He was a true friend to anyone having the privilege of knowing him, and his family has heard many stories of how he helped strangers who often soon became friends. Known far and wide for having a bountiful garden, Frank loved nature and the outdoors. If he had to be inside, he loved to read
western books or to challenge someone to a game of 45s. Frank was a long-time resident of The Mira, and we thank the nurses and staff of A Ward for their care and compassion during Frank's time with them. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Friday from 7-9 p.m. and funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m., both in South Maitland United Church, Rev. Marilyn MacDonald officiating. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia or a charity of choice. Arrangements are under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit.

Initials:       J J
Nationality:  Canadian
Rank:  Private
Regiment:  North Shore (New Brunswick) Regiment, R.C.I.C.
Date of Death:  11/10/1944
Service No:  F/36244
Additional information:  Son of Ernest Foster Miller and Ellen Miller, of Noel Shore, Hants Co., Nova Scotia.
Casualty Type:  Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference:  IV. D. 6.
Cemetery:  ADEGEM CANADIAN WAR CEMETERY (Maldegem, Oost-Vlaanderen, Belgium)
Adegem Canadian War Cemetery is located midway between Brugge (17 km) and Gent (26 km) on the N9 which connects the two towns. In the last week of September 1944, the Allies held the city of Antwerp, but the Germans held both shores of the Scheldt estuary, so that the port of Antwerp could not be used. The task of clearing the southern shore of the estuary was allotted to the 3rd Canadian Division, aided by the 4th Canadian Armoured Division and the 52nd Division. Their operations lasted from October until the beginning of November 1944; by 3 November the Germans had been cleared from the north-west corner of Belgium and the south shore of the Scheldt was free. There had been fierce fighting for two weeks for the crossing of the Leopold Canal. The majority of the men buried at Adegem died during the operations for the clearance of the south bank of the Scheldt, but many Canadians who lost their lives elsewhere in Belgium were also brought here for burial.
