SLATER, Dr. Myrna Eileen Clarke ? 92, ended a long and productive life filled with fun, friendship, family and accomplishments on July 23, 2011.
Born in Upper Kennetcook, Hants Co., she was the eldest daughter of the late Glyn and Gladys (Hennigar) Clarke. After graduating from high school in Windsor, Myrna went to Normal College in Truro to train as a teacher. She taught primary school in Hants County until the Second World War when she joined the Women's Royal Canadian Naval Service. In the fall of 1946, she entered the University of Toronto School of Nursing. Following graduation, Myrna joined the Public Health Nursing Division of the Toronto Department of Public Health. Over the next 17 years there she held various positions from Staff Nurse to Assistant Director. She returned to Halifax in 1954-55 to study Administration and Supervision at Dalhousie University. Following completion of a Masters Degree in Public Health Nursing at the University of Minnesota in 1969, she was appointed Director of Public Health Nursing
for the City of Toronto. Following eight years in that position, which included a term as President of the Ontario Public Health Association, Myrna returned to Nova Scotia. From 1977 to 1984 she was Assistant Professor and Special Lecturer, and later Assistant Director of the Dalhousie University School of Nursing. After retiring from Dalhousie, she became a passionate advocate for issues concerning women, health and aging. She served as
President of the Nova Scotia Division of Canadian Pensioners Concerned Inc.; National President of Canadian Pensioners Concerned, Inc. for two years; Chair of the Nova Scotia Steering Committee of Networking for Seniors; a former member of the Nova Scotia Advisory Council on the Status of Women and the Nova Scotia Senior Citizens Secretariat. She had also contributed numerous articles to professional publications. Her contributions to her
profession and to her community have been recognized with Honorary Doctorate Degrees from Dalhousie University and Mount Saint Vincent University, and she was a recipient of the Halifax Progress Club's Women of Excellence Award. A life-long Anglican and Progressive Conservative, she had served in many capacities as a parishioner of All Saints Cathedral and
over the years, led many a Progressive Conservative candidate for office through her apartment building at 5770 Spring Garden Rd. Besides her parents, Myrna was predeceased by her sister, Audrey (Murdock); brother, Doug (Clarke) and sister, Marjorie (Larsen). She was well-loved and will be deeply missed by surviving sister, Elsie Clarke, with whom she lived. Also survived by sister-in-law, Betty Clarke, Wolfville; nieces and nephews, Ann Larsen (Brian Robertson), Rothesay, N.B.; Ted Larsen, Halifax; Jane MacDonald (Bart MacDonald), Saint John, N.B.; Greg Murdock (Heather), Rothesay, N.B.; Jeff Murdock (Kelly), Oromocto, N.B.; Chris Murdock (Stacey), Saint John, N.B.; Julie Clarke (Steve Caseley), Hatchet Lake; Sue Clarke (Ray Hurst), New Hamburg, Ont.; Paul Clarke (Mary), Sackville, N.S.; MaryBeth Clarke, Wolfville; and 27 great-nieces and nephews, whose birthdays she never forgot. She was an inspiration and role model for us all. Cremation has taken place. Memorial service in Cathedral Church of All Saints, Halifax, on Friday, July 29, at 11 a.m. Burial at 3 p.m. in St.
Peter's Anglican Church, Upper Kennetcook. No flowers please. Donations to St. Peter's Anglican Church Fund or charity of choice.
