On a February 21st, 1925 Hendrikui Verberk and Cornelia De Weerd had a son named Lambertus Verberk, also Known as Bep.
Verberk lived in a vallage called Nijmegen not 12 miles from the German border. Nijmegen is in the Netherlands or in Dutch Nederlands.
Verberk was born into a family with two Sisters and one Brother. Verberk told me a story. The story was that during the Second World War people that were in between the ages of 15 to 55 had to have a pass saying that said that they ether were a student or had a job that helped the NAZI soldiers. Well this brother didn't have one. Well one night his brother went to a soccer game and at half time the hole filed filled with solders and he didn't have one so they put him in a concentration camp. Well in the Concentration camp his brother had an affair with one of the guards wives which got him free food. He told me that after the war she sent him a letter.
In Canada, English schools teach us French as a second language. Well we're lucky, because in Holland they are taught French, English, German, and there spoken Language Dutch.
As a child Verberk Learned how to box. He told me he learned how to box because he liked to follow his brother around, and when did his brother would beat him up.
Verberk told me a story about when he was a teenager during the second world war. He was coming from Germany and a NAZI solder took his bike and he had to walk fifteen miles home. He told me that it wasn't that long of a walk for him but considering that the bike was the most popular way of transportation back then I'd be mad.
By the end of the Second World War His sister had married a Canadian solder and moved to Canada. This mother was worried about her and asked him he would move to Canada to look after her. So at twenty-four years old and he left home for Canada.
He spent two weeks on a boat and finally he reached the shores of Quebec on May 17,1949. But his sister lived in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, so he was going to take a train there. The train stopped at every stop to unload and reload milk jugs. By the time he got to Halifax the train station was closed. Verberk walked to what he thought was Hollis street and found a taxi stand. He asked if he could sit there over night. One of the taxi drivers told him he could go on all the runs with him for the night, so he got to see allot of the city. The next morning he took the train to Yarmouth, but got off at the wrong stop. His sister was waiting at the other stop. He decided to catch a ride with the mail man who knew were his sister lived. The mail car dropped him off at a closer stop to his sister house. He walked to his sister house and was waiting on the steps when she came home from the train station.
Verberk attended Dalhousie University and worked during the summer as a Geological Surveyor for his teacher.
Verberk got his official Canadian Citizenship on January 4, 1956, he was thirty-one years old.
On November 7, 1955 exactly thirty-three years before I was born he married Anna Anthony of kennecook, Nova Scotia.
Anna Anthony is my grandmother, Meldon M. Bartlett's, cousin.
Verberk was teacher at St. Pat's high in Halifax.
Verberk now has two sons and a daughter, and currently resides in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
