- He moved with his family to Bath, Maine in 1900. It was necessary that he go to work before finishing high school. He enlisted in the US Army in 1917 and served in France and the occupation of Germany in a transportation unit. On at least one occasion, his vehical was hit by enemy artillery and the explosion left him somewhat hearing impaired. Being among the last to return from Europe, Roy had difficulty trying to regain his shipyard job. The family lived under primitive conditions for a few years. In 1927 he was again released from Bath Iron Works and took a "temporary" job as a loftman at Bethlehem Shipbuilding Division in Quincy, Massachusetts, from which he retired in 1960. He took innumerable correspondence courses and studied technical publications and became a superintendent of hull construction. His specialty was aircraft carriers. In the later years of his career, he served as an adjunct lecturer in naval architecture and marine engineering at MIT. He was selected by Admiral Rickover to build the first nuclear-powered naval vessel, the Long Beach.
