- Laurie is Ruel Garby's [RIN39] (Hazel Hennigar's husband) brother.
From his War Service record (Regtl. No. D 3187155):
It is possible that he was conscripted but in any case he enlisted at Aldershot Camp, N.S. on 6 Jun 1918 in the 1st Depot Battalion, Nova Scotia Regiment (Draft 102). Address listed as Upper Kennetcook and occupation as labourer. He left from Halifax 2 Aug 1918 on the S.S. IXION and disembarked at Liverpool on 16 Aug 1918. He was sent to Bramshott Camp. (Bramshott and Liphook is a parish on the eastern side of Hampshire, on the main London-Portsmouth road, the A3. Canadian troops were based on Bramshott Common, astride the A3, in both world wars; in World War I at least the camp became "one of the largest training areas for Canadian troops in the U.K.".)
On 16 Aug 1918, he was "TOS (taken on strength) on arrival from Canada and shown on Command to Bourley Seg.Camp.Aldershot", Bramshott, which likely meant "segregation camp," because he had possibly contracted some disease. On 22 Aug 1918 he was 'taken on strength' with the 17th Reserve Battalion. On 29 Sep 1918, he was admitted to the 12th Canadian General Hospital at Bramshott with the mumps where he stayed until 16 Oct 1918. It does not appear on his record that he served 'overseas' (i.e., mainland Europe).
Returned to Canada on 28 Jun 1919 on the 'Mauretania' and discharged from the 17th Reserve Battalion of the Nova Scotia Regiment on 13 Jul 1919.
